Coffeyville, Kansas is located in the southeastern part of the state, about 30 miles from the Arkansas border. The town was founded in 1869 and was named after Colonel A.B. Coffey, one of the original settlers. Coffeyville became a booming town in the late 1800s due to the booming oil industry.

The first permanent settler in what would become Coffeyville was James A. Bartholomew, a Missourian of Dutch ancestry, who arrived in Indian Territory in March, 1869. Bartholomew found a site for his home on the east bank of the Verdigris River near its confluence with the Fall River. A log cabin was built and Bartholomew moved his family into it that same month.
