Emporia lies between Topeka and Wichita at the intersection of U.S. Route 50 and Interstate 35 in east-central Kansas. The city is also home to Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 24,916.
Emporia was founded in 1857 by a man named William B. Howard, who later became its first mayor. Howard lured railroad developers to Emporia with columns he placed in eastern newspapers offering free right-of-ways through town if they would develop a line to the town along with three others he named: Leavenworth, Atchison and St. Joseph, Missouri. The development of the railroad made Emporia a regional economic hub for the surrounding agricultural area and played a large role in its subsequent growth.
