Joplin is a city located in the southwestern corner of Missouri, United States. Joplin is the largest city in Jasper County and the principal city of the Joplin, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area, which combines Jasper and Newton counties. As of 2010, the city’s population was 50,150.
Joplin is 30 miles (48 km) east of Pittsburg, Kansas and 108 miles (174 km) south-southwest of Kansas City.

The History of Joplin
Joplin is a city located in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Missouri. Joplin is the largest city in Jasper County, though it is not the county seat. As of 2010, the city’s population was 50,151. It is the principal city of the Joplin, Missouri metropolitan statistical area which covers all of Jasper and Newton Counties, an area with a population of 170,504 in 2010.
The city was founded in 1873 by John C. Cox, who built a three-story hotel on Main Street after purchasing land from railroad developers. Joplin became known as the “Led Zeppelin Capital of America” after several concerts by the group were performed there throughout their career.
The History of Kansas City
Kansas City is located in the western part of Missouri, about halfway between St. Louis and Wichita. The city was founded in 1838 and officially became a city in 1853. Kansas City grew rapidly during the late 19th century, becoming a major transportation hub for the region. The city’s population peaked at more than half a million people in 1950.
Since then, Kansas City’s population has declined significantly, as residents have moved to other parts of the country in search of better economic opportunities.
