For decades it was synonymous with Westport and Independence, two other area communities that were absorbed into the city limits; these three towns now make up Downtown Kansas City (also known colloquially as simply Downtown orKCMO). The nearby Wyandotte Nation formerly part of Missouri prior to Indian removal also contributed to this area’s growth after settlement by Anglo-American immigrants from eastern areas of Jackson County where slavery had been prohibited.
