Kansas is named after the Kansas River, which in turn was named after the Kansa Native American tribe; the river was called by them “Ka-ze-ko”, or “Kawsay”, meaning “people of the wind”.

The pace of European-American settlement accelerated in 1854 with a resulting increase in territorial conflicts each year thereafter until finally culminating into open warfare between pro-slavery elements and those opposed to slavery’s expansion into Kansas Territory (which at that time included modern day Colorado), known as Bleeding Kansas. The violence culminated on January 29, 1861 when anti-slavery forces detained U.S. Marshal Israel Andrews for assisting a fugitive slave, leading to clashes between militias that became known as Sherman’s Annihilation Raids which resulted in an estimated 100 killed or wounded on both sides (military and civilian)
