History of Lenexa

Lenexa’s founding
Lenexa’s City Center (the former city hall, now a community center) was the site of the Lenexa Pony Express station.
In 1858, when wagon trains heading westward from Missouri on the Santa Fe Trail camped for the night in Sarcoxie Bottoms (nearby present-day 95th Street and Interstate 35), cholera broke out and killed several people. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 had opened the area to settlement, but few settlers arrived until after the American Civil War.
In February 1865, railroad surveyor George Bonniwell was contracted by John C. Fremont’s Pacific Railroad to survey a route from Kansas City, Missouri through Johnson County to Denver, Colorado. Bonniwell’s party camped at Sarcoxie Bottoms on their first night out. Legend has it that while there, one of Bonniwell’s men shot a buffalo. The man skinned the animal and hung the hide on a tree near their campsite to dry. During the night, a flash flood hit the area and carried away everything in its path except the hide hung high in the tree; when daylight came, all that remained were three buffalo bones sticking up out of the mud. Because these bones were all that remained visible of their previous campsite after such a devastating flood, Bonniwell named his survey Lenexa, from the Greek word lepiexan meaning “bones.”
Lenexa’s incorporation
Lenexa was founded in 1869 and named for Antoine Lenexa, a French fur trader. It became an incorporated city in 1917. Agriculture has always been important to the city, but Lenexa began to grow more rapidly after World War II when it became home to several large corporations. Today, Lenexa is a diverse community with a bustling economy and plenty of amenities for residents to enjoy.
Lenexa’s growth
Lenexa’s growth can be traced back to the Santa Fe Trail, which ran through the city. The first recorded settler in the area was George Holliday, who established a farm near the trail in 1857. Holliday’s home served as a stopover for travelers on the trail, and soon a small community began to grow up around it.
In 1858, the city was officially laid out and named after Antoine Lenexa, a French-Canadian fur trader who had moved to the area in 1827. Lenexa quickly became a thriving agricultural community, and by the early 20th century it was home to several large grain mills and livestock auction houses.
The city continued to grow in the second half of the 20th century, spurred by the construction of Interstate 35 and the development of corporate parks along the highway. Today Lenexa is a thriving suburb of Kansas City with a population of over 48,000.
