History

Olathe was founded by Dr. John T. Barton in the spring of 1857 as the county seat of Johnson County, Kansas. He came from Louisville, Kentucky to Pleasant Hill in Montgomery County and then onward to Olathe with a leather bag full of medical supplies on a one-horse wagon. Barton wanted a centrally located county seat between Shawnee Mission and Independence, and he believed that the site at Black Bob Park would be ideal. He staked two quarter sections (160 acres / 0.65 km2) regarding the proposed site of his new town on what is now West 151st Street just south of current Interstate 35.

On July 24, 1980, a first class city charter was adopted after a special election voted 2,524 to 753 in favor of changing to a first-class charter city form of government. The name Olathe is from a Shawnee Indian tribe name which means “beautiful.”
