The museum contains an indoor sculpture garden, and the entirety of its grounds are open to the public daily without charge. The main building faces a large lawn with extensive greenery and several outdoor sculptures.
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art was established in 1933 through the merger of two private collections. The original buildings were designed by Keyes Dierdorff in the neoclassical style, and they were completed in 1925. An expansion designed by Arthur Boyd called for three new buildings to be added around a central courtyard, and it was completed in 2007.
