As of 2019, the population of Kansas City is around 488,000. The Greater Kansas City area, which includes parts of both Missouri and Kansas, has a population of around 2.1 million.
The history of Kansas City
The city was founded in the 1830s as a Missouri River port at its confluence with the Kansas River coming in from the west. On June 1, 1850 the town of Kansas was incorporated; shortly after came the establishment of Westport Landing. The first city charter was issued in 1851. Westport quickly became an outfitting point for wagon trains headed west. After independence, many immigrants from the American South came to Kansas City, staying on to settle permanently. In 1865, separate city governments were created for North Kansas City (now just “Northtown”) across the Missouri River and Kansas City, KS (now “KCI”).

With tremendous population growth after World War II, the city became an automobile assembly center for Chevy and Ford. Today, only GM remains in the city’s auto industry. Services have become more important with the growth of companies such as H&R Block and Sprint Nextel Corporation.

The future of Kansas City
As the baby boomers move into retirement, the demographics of Kansas City are shifting. In 2010, 35.3% of the population was under the age of 18, and 9.7% was 65 or older. But by 2030, those numbers are projected to change to 29% and 14%, respectively. The population of people in their prime working years (ages 25-54) will shrink from 55% to 52%.
The number of people living in Kansas City is projected to continue to grow, but at a slower rate than in the past. In 2010, the population was 467,004. By 2030, it is projected to be 498,915 – an increase of just over 3%.
