The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, and assumed their current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the merger in 1970. The team is valued at over $2 billion. Hunt’s son, Clark, serves as chairman and CEO of the team. While they have failed to make it to the Super Bowl in recent years, they did win Super Bowl IV against the Minnesota Vikings in 1970.

Previous Superbowls

The Kansas City Chiefs have been to the Super Bowl seven times, most recently in 2020. They have a record of one win and six losses in the big game. The Chiefs lost their first Super Bowl appearance to the Green Bay Packers in 1967.


The 1967 AFL-Championship Game was the seventh championship game in the history of the American Football League (AFL). It was played on January 14, 1968, at the Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, California. The Western Division champion Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Eastern Division champion Buffalo Bills by a score of 31–7.


The Chiefs reached the Super Bowl for the first time in 1970, where they faced the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings had won all four of their previous Super Bowl appearances, and were favored by 11 points going into the game. The Chiefs put up a valiant effort against the defending champions, but ultimately fell short, losing 23-7.


1971 was the year of the very first Superbowl. It was held on January 15th in Los Angeles, CA and featured the Green Bay Packers vs. the Kansas City Chiefs. The Packers won the game with a score of 35-10.


In 1972, the Kansas City Chiefs went to the Superbowl for the first time in team history. They were defeated by the Miami Dolphins, who were the reigning champions at the time.

Recent Superbowls

The Kansas City Chiefs have been to the Super Bowl a total of two times. They first went in 1966 and then again in 1970. They have yet to win a championship title.


The New England Patriots (13-3) defeated the Los Angeles Rams (13-3) 13-3 in Super Bowl LIII, the lowest scoring Super Bowl in history. The game was held on February 3, 2019 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. This was the Patriots’ third consecutive Super Bowl appearance and their eleventh overall. The Rams appeared in their fourth Super Bowl, all of which have been played within the last 17 years.


The Kansas City Chiefs won the most recent Superbowl against the San Francisco 49ers with a score of 31-20. This was their first Superbowl win in 50 years, and just their second appearance ever.


The 54th Super Bowl was played on February 2, 2020, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 31–20.


The Chiefs have been to the Super Bowl a total of two times. They won their first Super Bowl in 1970, and their second in 2019.
