Kansas Turnpike
The Kansas Turnpike is a 236-mile-long (380 km) freeway in the U.S. state of Kansas. It runs from the Oklahoma state line to Wichita, and serves as an east-west corridor through south-central Kansas. The turnpike is maintained and operated by the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA).
The Kansas Turnpike was originally built in 1956 as a toll road, and remains one of only a few toll roads in the United States that does not have an interstate designation. Tolls are collected at each of the seven interchanges along the route, and vary depending on the length of the trip. The minimum toll is $0.75, and the maximum toll is $8.00.
Kansas City Metropolitan Area
The cost of driving on Kansas toll roads depends on the road, your vehicle, and how you pay.
For example, if you’re driving a passenger car on the Kansas Turnpike from Wichita to the Oklahoma border, it will cost $4.50 for the trip if you have a K-TAG transponder, or $5.60 if you don’t. If you’re driving a semi-truck, the cost is $16.20 with a K-TAG or $20.80 without one.
There are also discounts available for frequent users of the Kansas Turnpike. For example, if you use the turnpike 20 times or more within a 30-day period, you can get a 20% discount on your tolls.
If you’re driving in the Kansas City metropolitan area, there are several different toll roads to choose from. The interstates 70 and 29 both have sections with electronic tolling, as well as the Missouri Route 9 in Blue Springs and Raytown. The rates for these roads range from $0.25 to $0.50 per mile, depending on which road you’re on and what time of day it is.
