The Blizzard of 2019
Hutchinson, Kansas got two feet of snow in the blizzard of 2019. This was the biggest snowstorm to hit the area in years. People were stranded in their homes for days and the roads were impassable. The snow was so deep that it took weeks to clean up.
January 28-29
On January 28-29, a winter storm swept through the Midwest, bringing strong winds and heavy snowfall. The storm, which has been nicknamed the “Blizzard of 2019,” brought up to 14 inches of snow to some parts of Kansas. Hutchinson was one of the hardest hit areas, with 12-14 inches of snow reported in some parts of the city.
February 1-3
Hutchinson, Kansas received 31.8 inches of snow from February 1-3, 2019 in what is being called the blizzard of 2019. This is the largest amount of snowfall the city has seen in one storm since records began being kept in 1888.

Hutchinson, Kansas got a lot of snow this week! Up to eight inches in some areas and more is expected in the coming days. This has caused some problems for residents, but overall most people are enjoying the winter weather.

drifts
While most of Hutchinson has seen about two to four inches of accumulation from the latest winter storm, there have been reports of much higher amounts in some areas, particularly in north Hutchinson where drifts have been reported.

After the huge snowstorm, Hutchinson, Kansas was practically covered in a blanket of snow. The whole city was impacted and it took a while for everyone to clean up. Even now, there are still piles of snow in some areas. Let’s take a look at how much snow Hutchinson, Kansas got.

It’s time to start the cleanup after the winter storm that swept across the state. In Hutchinson, Kansas, crews are working to clear roads and sidewalks.
The snow started falling on Tuesday night and continued through Wednesday morning. By Wednesday afternoon, accumulations had reached 6 to 8 inches in some areas.
city officials are urging residents to stay off the roads if possible and to be patient as crews work to clear them. They say it may take a few days to get everything cleared.
power outages
More than 4,000 Westar Energy customers in Hutchinson and Reno County were without power Tuesday morning as a winter storm swept through the area.
Westar spokesman Gina Penzig said the outages began at about 4:30 a.m. and were caused by snow and ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs coming into contact with lines.
Penzig said additional outages were possible as the storm continues.
“We urge customers to be patient as our crews work to restore power as quickly and safely as possible,” Penzig said. “We also ask that customers stay clear of any downed power lines and report them to us immediately.”
Reno County Emergency Management Director Bruce Lindahl urged residents to be prepared for the possibility of extended outages. Lindahl said residents should have enough food, water and medications on hand to last at least three days, as well as a plan for how to stay warm if the power is out for an extended period of time.

Due to the large amount of snowfall, many schools in the area are closed today. This includes USD 308, Buhler USD 313, Haven USD 312, Hesston USD 460, Inman USD 448, Moundridge USD423, Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309, Reno County USD 251 and Sedgwick CountyUSD 439.
