The construction of Arrowhead Stadium
In 1968, the Kansas City Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium became the first stadium in the NFL with a futuristic “ cantilevered” design, in which the upper decks hung over the lower decks, creating more seating without adding columns that obstructed views. The innovative design, by Populous (then HOK Sport), was ahead of its time—and remains unique among stadiums today.
The Chiefs needed a new home after Detroit’s Ford Field and Green Bay’s Lambeau Field had opened in 1957 and 1958, respectively, making Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium look dated. Voters approved $102 million in bonds to finance construction of Arrowhead and Kansas City Royals Stadium (now Kauffman Stadium), which would open in 1972.
Arrowhead originally had a capacity of 82,096—making it the seventh largest stadium in the NFL at the time. It was expanded to seat 76,416 for the 1991 season and then to 79,451 in 2010. The record attendance for an Arrowhead event is 79,945 for a Monday Night Football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 29, 2014.
