No. 1 North Carolina will put its perfect record on the line against No. 4 Kansas on Wednesday night in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels are coming off a dominant win over then-No. 3 Kentucky, while the Jayhawks are coming off a hard-fought victory over then-No. 2 Baylor.
This will be the first meeting between these two storied programs since 2016, when North Carolina won 79-73 in Kansas City. Both teams have changed quite a bit since then, but this is still shaping up to be one of the best games of the season. Here’s what to watch for:
The key matchup: It’s hard to pick just one matchup to watch in this game, but if we had to narrow it down, we’d go with Kansas freshman centers David McCormack and Silvio De Sousa against North Carolina junior center Garrison Brooks. Brooks is one of the best big men in the country, and he’s coming off a 22-point, 11-rebound performance against Kentucky. But he’ll have his hands full with McCormack and De Sousa, who are both physical presence in the paint.
Kansas’ perimeter defense: The Jayhawks have been very good defensively this season, but they haven’t faced an offense like North Carolina’s yet. The Tar Heels have five players averaging double figures in scoring, led by junior guard Cole Anthony (21.3 points per game). Anthony is one of the best scorers in the country, and he’ll be a tough test for Kansas’ perimeter defenders.
North Carolina’s frontcourt: As good as Brooks is, he can’t do it alone against Kansas’ big men. He’ll need some help from his teammates, particularly junior forward Armando Bacot and sophomore forward Sterling Manley. Bacot had a strong game against Kentucky with 12 points and eight rebounds, but Manley was largely invisible with just four points on 2-for-6 shooting. The Tar Heels will need both of them to step up if they want to keep pace with Kansas on Wednesday night.
Prediction
In their first matchup of the season, the Jayhawks defeated the Tar Heels 78-63. The two teams will face off again on Saturday, March 3 at 8:45 p.m. ET on ESPN.
It’s been a tough season for North Carolina, who has lost seven of their last 10 games. Kansas, on the other hand, is coming off a four-game winning streak. The Jayhawks are currently ranked No. 6 in the AP poll, while the Tar Heels are unranked.
Saturday’s game will be a rematch of last year’s Elite Eight game, which North Carolina won 80-67. The Tar Heels went on to lose to Villanova in the Final Four.
