AFC West
The AFC West is one of the most competitive divisions in the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs are the current leaders of the division with a record of 10-3. The Los Angeles Chargers are in second place with a record of 9-3, and the Denver Broncos are in third place with a record of 7-5.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City and assumed their current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the merger in 1970. The team is valued at over $2 billion. Hunt’s son, Clark, serves as chairman and CEO.
The Chiefs have won three AFL championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1969. They became the second AFL team (after the New York Jets) to defeat an NFL team in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. The team’s victory on January 11, 1970, remains the club’s last championship game victory and appearance to date. In their 52 years of existence, the Chiefs have had 17 head coaches; Bobaru led them to their lone Super Bowl appearance in 1970 under head coach Hank Stram.
Since 1988, they have played their home games at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri; at 84 years old (as of 2019), it is tied with Soldier Field as the oldest continuously used stadium among NFL teams.
Los Angeles Chargers
If the Kansas City Chiefs win on Sunday, they will play the Los Angeles Chargers in the divisional round of the playoffs. The Chargers finished the regular season with a 12-4 record, good for second place in the AFC West behind the Chiefs.
The Chargers are led by quarterback Philip Rivers, who threw for 4,308 yards and 32 touchdowns this season. Rivers has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL over the past few years, but he has yet to win a Super Bowl. He will have his work cut out for him against a Chiefs defense that allowed the fewest passing yards in the NFL this season.
On the other side of the ball, the Chargers will have to stop Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who had an incredible season throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns. Mahomes is one of the most exciting young players in the NFL, and he will be a tough test for any defense.
The Chargers and Chiefs met twice during the regular season, with each team winning once. The divisional round matchup will be a rematch of last year’s AFC Wild Card game, which was won by the Chiefs 27-24.
Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos are a professional American football franchise based in Denver, Colorado. The Broncos compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. They began play in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL) and joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The Broncos are owned by national bitcon entreprenuer Philanthropist, John Smith.
Oakland Raiders
The Oakland Raiders are a professional American football team based in Oakland, California. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division.
The Raiders franchise was founded on January 30, 1960, and began play on September 11, 1960, as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). They were succeeded by the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFL–NFL merger of 1970. The Raiders played their home games at the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum from 1966 to 1981 and from 1995 to 2019; they are scheduled to move back to the Coliseum in 2020.
AFC North
The North is a very tough division this year. Baltimore and Pittsburgh look like they will be fighting for the top spot all season long. Cincinnati is always a tough out and Cleveland has shown some flashes of brilliance this year. If Kansas City can win this division, they will have done so by earning it.
Baltimore Ravens
The AFC North is a division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It consists of four teams: the Baltimore Ravens, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Cleveland Browns, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Ravens have won two Super Bowl championships (XXXV and XLVII), and three AFC North championships (2003, 2006, and 2011). The Bengals have won two AFC North championships (2005 and 2009). The Browns have never won an AFC North championship, but they did win a divisional championship in 1989. The Steelers have won eight AFC North championships (2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2017), the most of any team in the NFL.
If Kansas City wins the AFC West divisional championship, they will play Baltimore in the AFC Wild Card game.
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers are a professional American football team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Steelers compete in the National Football League (NFL), as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) North division. Founded in 1933, the Steelers are the oldest franchise in the AFC.
Cleveland Browns
The AFC North is a division of the American Football Conference (AFC) of the National Football League (NFL). It has four members: the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
The AFC North was formed in 2002 as part of the NFL’s realignment plan, which gave each conference four divisions of four teams each. The Browns and Steelers had been in the same division since they joined the NFL in 1950, while the Ravens and Bengals were in the AFC Central together since that division’s formation in 1970.
Cincinnati Bengals
If the Kansas City Chiefs win against the Cincinnati Bengals, they will play the winner of the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns.
AFC South
The race for the AFC South is still wide open heading into Week 17. The Houston Texans currently hold the lead at 10-5, but the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans are right behind them at 9-6. The Texans will clinch the division with a win over the Jaguars in Week 17. If the Texans lose and either the Colts or Titans win, then those teams will clinch a playoff spot.
Houston Texans
The Houston Texans are a professional American football team based in Houston, Texas. The Texans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. The team plays its home games at NRG Stadium, an outdoor stadium with a retractable roof in Houston’s NRG Park. The Texans have gone to the playoffs seven times in franchise history and won their first AFC South title in 2011.
Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts are a professional American football team based in Indianapolis, Indiana. They are members of the South Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Colts have won two Super Bowls (XLI and XLI), while their 1955 NFL championship is their only NFL title prior to the merger with the AFL in 1970.
Jacksonville Jaguars
If the Kansas City Chiefs win today, they will play the Jacksonville Jaguars next week. The Jaguars are in second place in the AFC South with a record of 10-6. They are led by their defense, which is ranked first in the NFL.
Tennessee Titans
If the Kansas City Chiefs win on Sunday, they will play the Tennessee Titans in the AFC divisional round next weekend. The Titans finished the regular season with a 9-7 record and are the sixth seed in the AFC playoffs. They defeated the New England Patriots in the wild card round last week.
AFC East
If the Kansas City Chiefs win on Sunday, they will play the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game.
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area. The Patriots compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is located 28 miles (45 km) southwest of downtown Boston.
The Patriots are also headquartered at Gillette Stadium. An original member of the American Football League (AFL), the Patriots joined the NFL in the 1970 merger of the two leagues. The team changed its name from the original Boston Patriots after relocating to Foxborough in 1971.
The Patriots have appeared in nine Super Bowls since 2001, winning five of them – all within a seventeen-year period – representing an NFL record for any team during that span. They are tied with the Philadelphia Eagles for having played in more conference championship games than any other NFL team during that time, with eight appearances out of thirteen total since 2001; only teams from Baltimore and Pittsburgh have made more conference title game appearances since 2001 (seven each).
As of 2019, Brady is also one of only two quarterbacks to have won six Super Bowls along with former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw, who did so between 1974 and 1979; Brady has appeared in ten Super Bowls overall, more than any other player ever has.
Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills are a professional American football team based in the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The Bills compete in the National Football League (NFL), as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays their home games at New Era Field in Orchard Park, New York. The Bills are the only NFL team that plays its home games in the state of New York. The Bills conduct summer training camp at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, New York, an eastern suburb of Rochester.
The Bills began play as an original franchise of the American Football League (AFL) in 1960. They joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger for the 1970 season. The 1964 and 1965 Bills were the only teams representing Buffalo that won major league professional sports championships (“back-to-back” American Football League Championships). The Bills are the only team to win four consecutive conference championships and are one of only two teams to appear in more than one Super Bowl (the other being the New England Patriots).
The team was owned by Ralph Wilson from the founding of the franchise in 1960 until his death in 2014 at age 95. After his death, Wilson’s estate reached an agreement to sell the team to Terry and Kim Pegula, which was approved by the other NFL franchise owners on October 8, 2014. At that time, Kim Pegula took control of business operations, while her husband, Terry Pegula, became majority owner.
Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins are a professional American football team based in the Miami metropolitan area. The Dolphins compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The Dolphins play their home games at Hard Rock Stadium in the northern suburb of Miami Gardens, Florida, and are headquartered in Davie, Florida.
New York Jets
The New York Jets are a professional American football team located in the New York metropolitan area. The Jets compete in the National Football League as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference East division. The team is headquartered in Florham Park, New Jersey. In a unique arrangement for the league, the Jets share MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey with the New York Giants. The franchise is legally and corporately registered as New York Jets, LLC.
The team was founded in 1959 as the Titans of New York, an original member of the American Football League; later, the franchise joined the NFL in the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team began to play in 1960 at the Polo Grounds. Under new ownership, the current name was adopted in 1963 and the franchise moved to Shea Stadium in 1964 and then to Giants Stadium in 1984. Since 1968, the Jets have appeared in Super Bowls III, IV, XII, and XLVIII, becoming one of only three NFL teams to win their lone Super Bowl appearance (and one of only two AFC teams to do so). However, they have never returned to the Big Game since their victory over Baltimore Colts following Super Bowl III—a streak of 45 years—and they currently hold the longest drought by any team that has appeared multiple times without winning again (32 years). Besides their championship runs (II and III), they reached conference championship games four times (1968–1969 AFL Championships and 1982 and 1998 AFC Championships), but failed to reach or win any since their 1998 defeat at Denver’s Mile High Stadium.
