The states of Missouri and Kansas
Of confusion to many visitors and newcomers to the area is the question of which state is Kansas City actually in? The answer isn’t as simple as one might think, as the city of Kansas City is actually located in both the states of Missouri and Kansas.
The city was originally founded in 1838 as a port town at the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas rivers. It officially became a city in 1853, when it was incorporated into the state of Missouri. In 1889, following a period of economic and population growth, Kansas City was admitted as the 31st state of the United States. However, due to financial difficulties, it was forced to cede land back to Missouri in 1861, resulting in its current location on both sides of the state border.
Despite being located in two different states, Kansas City functions as a single integrated metropolitan area. This is largely due to its shared history and culture, as well as its strong economic ties. The metropolitan area is home to over 2 million people, making it one of the largest in the Midwest.
The city of Kansas City
The city of Kansas City is located in the state of Missouri in the Midwestern United States. The city is situated along the Kansas-Missouri border, and it straddles the two states. As such, it is sometimes referred to as “KCK” or “KCMO.” Kansas City is the largest city in Missouri and the 23rd largest city in the United States. The city has a population of over 467,000 people.
The confusion between the two
The confusion between the two Kansas Cities began in the late 1800s. The city of Kansas was founded in 1850, and, shortly thereafter, a company called the Town of KansasLand Company laid out and began to sell plots for a new city just across the Missouri River from Kansas City, Missouri. This new city was called “Kansas City” (with no state designation), and it was soon incorporated. Meanwhile, the city of Kansas (on the Kansas side of the river) changed its name to “Kansas City” in 1889 in an effort to capitalize on the growing popularity of its neighbor.
The difference between the states of Missouri and Kansas
Kansas City is located in both the states of Missouri and Kansas. The Missouri River runs through the center of the city, dividing it into two parts. The majority of the city’s population is located on the Missouri side, while the Kansas side is mostly suburban and rural.
The two states have a long history of competition, and there are some notable differences between them. For example, Missouri has no income tax, while Kansas does. Kansas City is also located in what’s known as “ Tornado Alley,” so residents of both states are used to severe weather warnings and emergency preparedness.
Despite these differences, the states of Missouri and Kansas share a strong sense of community and regional pride. Residents of both states are quick to point out that Kansas City is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
