Visit the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve
The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is one of the best places to see tallgrass prairie in the United States. The preserve is located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas and is home to a variety of grasses, wildflowers, and animals. Visitors can explore the prairie on foot, by bike, or on a horse-drawn wagon. There are also a number of ranger-led programs and events held at the preserve throughout the year.
Take a scenic drive down the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway
The Flint Hills National Scenic Byway is a 233-mile (375-kilometer) route that traverses the heart of the Flint Hills in Kansas. This unique landscape is home to some of the tallest grasses in the world, and the byway offers stunning views of this sea of grass, as well as opportunities to spot wildlife and learn about the area’s history and culture.
There are several different ways to experience the byway, but one of the most popular is to take a scenic drive. The byway can be experienced in one day, but if you have more time, there are plenty of places to stop along the way to explore, hike, camp or simply enjoy the view.
Spend a day at the Kansas State Fair
Every September, the Kansas State Fair comes to Hutchinson for 11 days of family fun. The fairgrounds cover more than 350 acres, and there are more than 300 commercial vendors, food concessions and exhibits. Fairgoers can enjoy rides and games, watch livestock shows and auctions, see thrilling entertainment acts and much more.
Visit the Kansas Speedway
The Kansas Speedway is a world-class auto racing facility that hosts NASCAR and IndyCar events. The speedway is located in Kansas City, Kansas, and features a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) tri-oval track with 24 degrees of banking in the turns. The speedway has a seating capacity of over 55,000 spectators.
The Kansas Speedway hosts several NASCAR events each year, including the Sprint Cup Series, the Nationwide Series, and the Camping World Truck Series. The speedway also hosts the IndyCar Series on odd-numbered years. In addition to auto racing, the Kansas Speedway also hosts concerts and other special events throughout the year.
Take a hike through the Konza Prairie
The Konza Prairie is a beautiful and unique place to take a hike, with miles of trails that wind through tallgrass prairie and forest. This area is full of interesting plants and animals, including many that are only found in the tallgrass prairie. You can also see evidence of the early people who lived here, from Native American campsites to pioneer homesteads.
