The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team that began play in 1960 as the Dallas Texans. The team was founded by Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). They became the Kansas City Chiefs in 1963. The Early Years
The Kansas City Chiefs began in 1960 as the Dallas Texans. They were a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). The team was founded by Lamar Hunt, who also helped found the AFL. The team’s name was changed to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1963. The Chiefs have won two AFL championships and three Super Bowls.
The team’s founding
The Kansas City Chiefs were founded in 1959 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt. He originally wanted to name the team the “Kansas City Texans,” but when he was unable to find a suitable stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, he decided to move the team to Dallas, Texas. The team’s home stadium was the Cotton Bowl.
In 1963, the team moved from Dallas to Kansas City and changed their name to the “Kansas City Chiefs.” The following year, they defeated the Buffalo Bills in the AFL Championship game. They went on to defeat the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV, which was the last AFL-NFL World Championship game before the two leagues merged.
The team’s early success
In just their eighth season in the AFL, the Chiefs won their first league championship in 1966. Led by head coach Hank Stram and quarterback Len Dawson, the team racked up an impressive 11–2–1 record that year. The Chiefs went on to defeat the Buffalo Bills in the AFL Championship Game, giving them their first title.
That same year, the Chiefs also made it to the Super Bowl for the first time ever. They may have lost to the Green Bay Packers in that game, but it was still an impressive accomplishment for such a young team.

In 1963, the franchise was rebooted once again as the Kansas City Chiefs, named after a former mayor of Kansas City who had a big hand in helping to bring the team to Missouri. The Chiefs won their first AFL championship in 1966, and went on to win two more championships in 1969 and 1970. In 1976, head coach Hank Stram was replaced by Marv Levy, but Levy was unable to turn things around and was fired after three seasons. Fortunately, things began to look up for the Chiefs in 1979 when they hired head coach Dick Vermeil.
The team’s continued success
The team’s continued success in the 1990s and early 2000s saw them win several more divisional titles. In 1993, they went 13-3 and won their second consecutive AFC West title. They went on to lose to the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game. The next year, they went 12-4 and won the AFC West again. They defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card game, but lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers in the AFC Divisional Playoffs. In 1995, they went 11-5 and won their third consecutive AFC West title. They defeated the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Wild Card game, but lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship game.
In 1997, head coach Marty Schottenheimer was fired after a 6-10 season and replaced by former New York Giants head coach Bill Parcells. Parcells led the team to a 13-3 record and their fourth AFC West title in 1998. They defeated the Miami Dolphins in the AFC Wild Card game, but lost to eventual Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional Playoffs. The team went 8-8 in 1999 and missed the playoffs. In 2000, they went 11-5 and won their fifth AFC West title under Parcells. They defeated the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Wild Card game, but lost to eventual Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Divisional Playoffs.

The Chiefs were heavy underdogs going into the game, but they ended up winning the game by a score of 23-7. This was the final AFL-NFL World Championship before the two leagues merged into one.
