The team’s history

The Kansas City Chiefs were founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans.

In 1963, the team moved to Kansas City and became the Kansas City Chiefs. The team has had three home stadiums in their history. They played at Municipal Stadium from 1963 to 1971, Arrowhead Stadium from 1972 to present, and Kauffman Stadium from 1972 to present. The Chiefs have been in the playoffs 20 times in their history, winning 3 Super Bowls (IV, L, and LI).

The team moved to Kansas City in 1963 and became the Kansas City Chiefs.

The team’s history began when they were founded in 1959 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt. At the time, most professional football teams were based in cities on the East Coast. Hunt believed that there should be a team in the middle of the country, so he submitted a proposal to the American Football League (AFL). The league granted him a franchise, and the Dallas Texans were born.

In their first season, the Texans were successful, winning the AFL Championship. However, they struggled financially in their second season and Hunt decided to move the team to Kansas City, where they would be known as the Chiefs.

Since then, the Chiefs have been one of the most successful teams in the NFL, winning Super Bowl IV and appearing in two other Super Bowls. They have also won eight AFC Championships and have had numerous Pro Bowl players throughout their history.

The Chiefs have won two Super Bowls, in 1970 and 2019.

The team’s victory on February 2, 2020, over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV made them the second franchise to win both AFL and NFL championships—and they are one of only five teams to do so (joining the former Dallas Texans/Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Colts/Indianapolis Colts, and New York Jets/New York Giants). The Texans/Chiefs were also one of only two AFC teams to win a Super Bowl prior to the 1972 NFL–AFL merger (the other being Miami), thus becoming one of only four pre-merger franchises ever to capture an AFL or NFL title since their establishment (the others being Green Bay winning 11 NFL championships prior to their first Super Bowl win under that name; Detroit winning four pre-merger NFL titles; and Chicago winning one pre-merger NFL title).
