The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City and assumed their current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970.

The team’s fan base is referred to as the “Sea of Red” for its large number of fans wearing red apparel at Arrowhead Stadium, one of the loudest stadiums in sports.

The Chiefs were also the target of one of the largest thefts in sports history. In 1987, $425,000 worth of game checks intended for players on the visiting Seattle Seahawks were stolen from Arrowhead Stadium by a former security guard. The Seahawks players eventually received their paychecks, but not before they missed their flight home and had to spend an extra night in Kansas City.
