In 1963, the team was purchased by a group of Knoxville businessmen led by Lamar Hunt for $25,000. The new owners changed the team’s name to “Kansas City Chiefs” in honor of then-Mayor Harold Roe Bartle, who had been a part of adding professional football to Kansas City in the first place.
