History of Lucas, Kansas
Lucas, Kansas is located in Russell County in the central part of the state. The city was founded in 1857 and incorporated in 1879. The first post office was established in 1858. The community was named for Fort Lucas, which was established in 1855 to protect settlers from Indian attacks.
The city is home to the Grassroots Art Center, which is housed in eight of the original buildings of the town’s first hospital. Thecenter promotes self-taught artists and features a museum, art center, and gallery.
