History of Kansas City

Kansas City was founded in 1838 as a Missouri River port at its confluence with the Kansas River coming in from the west. On June 1, 1850, the town of Kansas was incorporated; shortly after came naming conflicts over whether it should be called Kansas City or its original name of Kanzas. With rapid growth prompted by railroad construction to administer local government rapidly proved inadequate; streets became choked with wagons and pedestrians; residents were frustrated over increases in crime and violence as new arrivals arrived rapidly without adequate housing or policing leaving social order established by Squatters Row quickly unraveling; In March 1853 Missouri Legislature created five police districts within Jackson County for enforcement purposes with each having its own police department by April 1854 currently creating what is today’s modern-day downtown Police Department Central Patrol Division”
