Introduction

A former four-star recruit from Kansas, Skylar Thompson was a key member of the Wildcats’ back-to-back Big 12 championship teams in 2018 and 2019. He started 23 games over his final two seasons in Manhattan and was a two-time honorable mention All-Big 12 selection.

But after leading Kansas State to an 8-5 record and a Liberty Bowl berth in 2020, Thompson’s production dipped sharply. He completed just 52.3 percent of his passes for 2, Morse said Thompson “just never got into a rhythm” last season and added that the quarterback’s struggles were “magnified” because of the team’s offensive struggles as a whole.

Thompson entered the 2021 season as Kansas State’s starter, but he was replaced by Will Howard in the team’s second game against Oklahoma State. Howard, a redshirt freshman, led the Wildcats to an upset win over then No. 3 Oklahoma the following week.

Kansas State coach Chris Klieman has not named a starter for Saturday’s game against TCU, but it is clear that Thompson has lost his grip on the starting job. So what happened to the once promising young quarterback?
