The Injury
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes left Thursday night’s game against the Denver Broncos with a right knee injury, and did not return. Mahomes was injured in the second quarter when he was hit by Broncos defensive lineman Mike Purcell while he was throwing a pass.
The hit
In the third quarter of the AFC divisional playoff game against the Cleveland Browns, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was hit hard by Browns defensive end Myles Garrett. The hit caused Mahomes to stumble and fall to the ground, where he was immediately surrounded by medical personnel. After being examined on the sidelines, Mahomes was taken to the locker room for further evaluation.
The diagnosis
Mahomes suffered a dislocated kneecap in the first half of Thursday’s game against the Broncos. The Chiefs said Friday that an MRI had confirmed the diagnosis.
The Recovery
After a successful season, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Mahomes suffered a dislocated kneecap in a game against the Broncos. The injury occurred in the third quarter when Mahomes was tackled by a Broncos player. The Chiefs immediately took him out of the game and he was diagnosed with a dislocated kneecap.
The surgery
The Chiefs’ QB had successful surgery to repair his torn ACL, according to head coach Andy Reid. The procedure was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Gulf Breeze, Florida. Mahomes will now begin the rehab process with the Chiefs’ training staff. The timeline for his return is still unknown, but he is expected to make a full recovery.
The rehabilitation
In the months following the injury, Jackson underwent various surgeries to repair the ligaments in his knee. He also began extensive rehabilitation, which he continues to this day. The goal of his rehabilitation is to regain full range of motion in his knee and to strengthen the muscles around it.
So far, Jackson has made substantial progress. He is now able to walk without pain and has even started jogging and doing light workouts. His goal is to be back on the field when the Chiefs start their training camp in July.
Although it will be a long road to recovery, Jackson is determined to return to the game he loves. With hard work and dedication, there is no doubt that he will achieve his goal.
The Return
Mahomes was out for weeks with a dislocated kneecap, but now he’s back and looking better than ever. He’s thrown for over 400 yards and 3 touchdowns in his first game back, and the Chiefs are now 7-1 on the season. Let’s take a closer look at what happened.
The comeback
In 1999, Chiefs’ quarterback Trent Green suffered a gruesome knee injury that sidelined him for the season. While many thought his career might be over, Green worked tirelessly to rehab his knee and return to the field the following year. His dedication was rewarded with a Pro Bowl selection, and he went on to have a successful career with the Chiefs and Rams.
The impact
In the National Football League, the Chiefs’ home state of Missouri is a border state between the AFC West and the NFC West. As such, the Chiefs have had a long-standing rivalry with the St. Louis Rams (now the Los Angeles Rams). The two teams have played each other more times than any other opponents in NFL history, with the Chiefs leading the all-time series 54–52–2.
The return of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith was always going to be an emotional one. After all, he spent five seasons with the San Francisco 49ers before being traded to the Chiefs in 2013.
But what nobody could have predicted was the events that would transpire leading up to his return. Just days before the game, Smith’s former teammate and close friend San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested on suspicion of DUI and Hit & Run. Then, on game day, it was revealed that Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel had been diagnosed with lymphoma and was beginning treatment immediately.
With all of this happening in such a short amount of time, it would have been easy for Smith to let emotions get the best of him. But that’s not what happened. Instead, he went out and had one of the best games of his career, completing 23 of 28 passes for 293 yards and three touchdowns as the Chiefs defeated the 49ers 22-17.
It wasn’t just Smith’s on-field performance that was impressive, but also his post-game press conference where he spoke about Crennel’s diagnosis and Aldon Smith’s arrest. Showing remarkable poise under pressure, Smith handled both situations with grace and class, exhibiting why he is not only one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL but also one of its best leaders.
