The Tropic of Cancer is 23.5 degrees North latitude. Everything south of this line is in the Southern Hemisphere. This includes most of Mexico, all of Central America, the Caribbean islands, and much of South America. In the United States, this line bisects Florida and Hawaii.
In the Southern Hemisphere, winter occurs when it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere and vice versa. This is because the Earth’s axis is tilted away from the sun during half of its orbit around the sun. The part of Earth that tilts toward the sun experiences summer while the part that tilts away experiences winter.
