The code was originally created for the city of Kansas City, but it has since been expanded to include the entire metropolitan area. The code is 913, and it covers an area that includes parts of Missouri and Kansas.
The first area code in the Kansas City area was 816
The first area code in the Kansas City area was 816. It originally covered the entire state of Missouri. In 1947, it was split, with the eastern half becoming 314 and the western half becoming 417. In 1951, 471 was assigned as an overlaying code to Kansas City, making it one of the first areas in the country to have two area codes.
In 1997, 539 was added as an overlay to 816. 785 and 913 were also added as overlays in 2000. In 2001, a split was implemented, with Kansas City north of the Missouri River moving to 816 and Kansas City south of the river keeping 913. The 539 overlay remained in place for both sides of the river.
