The Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City, Missouri and became the Kansas City Chiefs.

The team’s name
The team was originally named the Dallas Texans, and was founded by Lamar Hunt in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and was renamed the Kansas City Chiefs. The team is currently a member of the National Football League (NFL), having joined as part of the 1970 AFL–NFL merger.
The Chiefs’ Mascot
The Kansas City Chiefs have a long-standing tradition of having a mascot. The first Chiefs’ mascot was a horse named Warpaint. Warpaint was the Chiefs’ mascot from 1963 to 1989. In 1989, the Chiefs introduced a new mascot, a lion named K.C. Wolf. K.C. Wolf has been the Chiefs’ mascot ever since.
The origins of the Chiefs’ mascot
The origins of the Chiefs’ mascot are rooted in team owner Lamar Hunt’s childhood experience. As a child, Hunt was given the nickname “Chief” by his father, who was a member of the YMCA Indian Guides. The name “Chiefs” was chosen for the new AFL team in 1960, in part to honor Hunt’s nickname.
In 1963, the Chiefs hired Ernie Chambers as their first official mascot. Chambers, a member of the Kansas City Chiefs training staff, dressed up as a Native American warrior and performed at every home game. He would ride onto the field on a horse named Warpaint and lead the fans in cheers. Chambers continued to serve as the Chiefs mascot until his retirement in 1988.
In 1989, the Chiefs introduced their current mascot, K.C. Wolf. K.C. is a lovable wolf character who wears a Chiefs jersey and is often seen interacting with fans at games and events. He has been featured on national television commercials and even has his own line of merchandise.
The Chiefs’ mascot today
The current Chiefs’ mascot is Warpaint, who made his Chiefs’ debut in 1989. Warpaint is a white conducted stallion who wears a Chiefs’ uniform while he gallops around the field during Chiefs’ home games.
