The Land of Ahs is the official nickname for the U.S. state of Kansas. The nickname was first proposed in 1947 by Ellsworth Collings, a Kansas City, Missouri, advertising executive. It was officially adopted by the state legislature in 1957.
The Land of Ahs is a reference to the sound made when singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The first verse of the national anthem includes the line “And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,” which is often sung as “Ahs.”
