Holliday (1826–1900) as a Wichita Town Company proposal for a proposed new town on the Kansas Pacific Railway. They purchased 2,080 acres (840 ha; 3.4 sq mi) along with locomotive works and Chance & Co.’s chance for $32,500 on March 2, 1871. Ingalls Shipbuilding later operated as a major employer from 1916 until 1993 when it filed for bankruptcy protection due largely in part to competition with Japanese shipbuilders’ low-cost labor during World War II which put pressure on Ingalls to reduce their costs too much too quickly without adequate replacement contracts lined up afterwards
