Under head coach Hank Stram, the Texans/Chiefs were one of the most successful teams in the early years of the AFL, winning three League Championships and appearing in two Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl IV in 1970. In 1972, the Chiefs hired former Oakland Raiders head coach John Madden as their head coach. After starting his tenure with a 13–1 season, Madden led the Chiefs to an appearance in Super Bowl I. However, they lost to Green Bay Packers 35-10. He retired from coaching after just two seasons at Kansas City.
The Chiefs have appeared in seven AFC Championship Games and won one NFL title during 1969 when they defeated Minnesota Vikings 23-7 in Super Bowl IV—their first ever appearance in a Super Bowl—behind linebacker Willie Lanier’s two interception returns for touchdowns and Len Dawson’s game-winning touchdown pass to receiver Otis Taylor with just under five minutes to play.
