What is the point spread?
The point spread is the number of points by which the better team is expected to win. In order for a bet on the favorite to win, that team must win by more than the point spread. In order for a bet on the underdog to win, that team must either win the game outright or lose by less than the point spread. If the favorite wins by exactly the number of points shown as the point spread, it is called a push and no money is won or lost on that bet.
How is the point spread determined?
The point spread – also called “the line” or “the spread” – is used as a margin ot win between the two teams. For betting purposes, the oddsmaker predicts that the favored team will win by a certain number of points. This number of points is the point spread. The favorite is always indicated by a minus sign (e.g. -5.5) and the underdog by a plus sign (e.g.+5.5). If you bet on the favorite, you win your bet if they win BY MORE THAN the point spread. In other words, they don’t have to win the game, they just have to win _by more than the point spread_. And if you bet on the underdog, you win if they win the game _or if they lose but lose by less than_the point spread_.
The point spread is voting with dollars – everyone betting on a particular side of the line drives it up or down. The most common side to bet on is probably going to be -110 since it only requires you to risk $11 for every $10 you want to make in profits, whereas other sports such as baseball may require betting $220 to make just $100 in profits (+120).
How does the point spread affect betting?
The point spread is the number of points given or subtracted from a team’s score to determine the victory margin. If Kansas City is favored by four points, then they must win by more than four for a bet on them to pay off. If they win by exactly four, then it is a push, and the bettor gets their money back. If they lose by any margin, then the bettor loses their money.
How does the point spread affect the Kansas City game?
The point spread is the number of points by which the better team is expected to win. In this case, the better team is Kansas City, and they are expected to win by 4 points. This means that if you bet on Kansas City, they must win by more than 4 points for you to win your bet. If they win by exactly 4 points, then it is a push, and your bet is refunded.
