Fort Riley
Fort Riley is a United States Army installation located in northeast Kansas, on the Kansas River, between Junction City and Manhattan. Fort Riley is named in honor of Major General Bennet C. Riley, who led the first military escort along the Santa Fe Trail.

History
Fort Riley is a historic United States Army post located in Kansas. The post was established in 1853 and named in honor of Major General Bennett C. Riley, who led the First Regiment of Dragoons to the site during the Mexican-American War. Fort Riley is home to the 1st Infantry Division, also known as “The Big Red One.” The post has a population of approximately 25,000 people, making it one of the largest military installations in the country.

The portion of the fort that contains housing development is part of the Fort Riley census-designated place, with a 2010 population of 7,761 people. The fort has a daytime population of nearly 25,000. Fort Riley is named in honor of Major General Bennett C. Riley who led the first military escort along the Santa Fe Trail.
Fort Riley is home to 1st Infantry Division, also known as “The Big Red One” or “The Fighting First.” The 1st Infantry Division’s Headquarters and 1st Brigade are located at Fort Riley. McConnell Air Force Base
McConnell Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located in Wichita, Kansas. The base is named in honor of World War I pilot Lieutenant Colonel William “Billy” Mitchell. McConnell Air Force Base is the home of the 22d Air Refueling Wing, which is the largest KC-135 Stratotanker refueling wing in the Air Force.

McConnell Air Force Base is located in Wichita, Kansas. It is the home of Air Mobility Command’s 22d Air Refueling Wing. The base was founded in 1951 and is named in honor of 2d Lieutenant Fred McConnell.
History
McConnell AFB is named in honor of 2nd Lt Fred W McConnell. McConnell was a pioneer in air mail service, flying the first airmail route from Chicago to New York in 1926. He tragically died later that year when his plane crashed in a field near Wheaton, Illinois.
The base began as Wichita Municipal Airport in October 1924. In January 1951, the base was renamed Wichita Air Force Base. The name was changed to honor Lt McConnell in May 1954.
Strategic Air Command (SAC) assumed control of the facility in 1957 and converted it into a heavy bomber base. B-47s were the first bombers assigned to the base, followed by B-52s in 1963. In 1967, SAC assigned KC-135s to the base for aerial refueling missions.
In 1992, following the dissolution of SAC, McConnell AFB was realigned under Air Mobility Command (AMC). It continues to serve as a vital refueling stop for AMC and other Military Airlift Command aircraft transiting through the region.

Fort Leavenworth
Fort Leavenworth is a United States Army installation located in Leavenworth County, Kansas, in the city of Leavenworth. The fort lies on the west bank of the Missouri River, north of Kansas City. It is the oldest active United States Army post west of the Mississippi River, and it is the headquarters of the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC).

Fort Leavenworth is a United States Army installation located in Leavenworth County, Kansas, in the city of Leavenworth—in the northeast part of the state, on the west bank of the Missouri River, northeast of Kansas City. Established in 1827, it is the oldest active United States military post west of Washington, D.C., and the oldest permanent settlement in Kansas. It covers 167 acres (0.68 km2) and includes 36 historic buildings dating back to 1817, when Fort Leavenworth became the first post west of the Mississippi River.
