Kansas City was founded in 1838 as a port at confluence of three major rivers: The Arkansas River (flowing from Colorado), The Missouri River (flowing from Montana), and The Kansas River (flowing from Wyoming). The city became an important transportation hub between Westward expansion by railroads coming out of MissouriRiver ports and waterways along Mississippi River to Midwestern industrial cities and Eastern markets. In 1850, Hannibal Bridge, funded by town founder John C. Frémont’s private wealth and public subsidies, connected Kansas City to St. Louis NEC by rail; this demonstrated that overland transportation routes from Midwestern interior to East Coast were viable alternatives to water routes which dominate at that time. After Civil War ended in 1865, Federal government deleted Native American homelands within Treaty borders as part of Reconstruction program; this caused large scale displacement known as “Indian Removal”. On February 22 1865 Quantrill’s Raid occurred during American Civil War when guerrilla fighters led by William Quantrill attacked Union Army troops stationed inside Lawrence City killing more than 150 civilians; this single event caused irreparable damage to Lawrence’s reputation as safe place for abolitionist activity which ultimately led to sack of Osceola and sacking/burning much of entire town just 10 years later leading up to American Old West period where gunfights were common place events on American frontier towns.
In 1880s, Kansas City became national center for Vice trade due to its central location and lenient law enforcement; various forms of illegal gambling prospered throughout city including but not limited to saloons offering cockfighting, bearbaiting , prizefighting , alligator-pulling , racing , faro dealing , policy slander games ; prostitution houses ; all women were imported from out of state due mostly New Orleans . These illicit activities became such common place events that many respectable citizens living within red light districts started petitioning against their own neighbors just so they would be able stop living surrounded by such sinfulness ; such petitions were successful leading eventual shut down most visible aspects KC’s VICE operations but illegalized activities still persisted well into early 1900s . 1914 saw opening first film studio west Mississippi River Laical Studios which was responsible some first full-length motion pictures shot west river including 1913 feature film The Squaw Man which also happened be first full length feature film shot entirely indoors using new technology electric arc lights . Laical would eventually fold due Great Depression but not before having massive impact both movie industry specifically silent era films helping establish Hollywood itself southwestern US .
