The Chiefs began play as the Dallas Texans, an expansion team founded by businessman Lamar Hunt in 1960. Hunt’s intention was to bring major professional football to Dallas and have it played at the Cotton Bowl. Despite the promising start, which included an appearance in Super Bowl I, Hunt’s Texans soon struggled due to poor on-field performance and attendance struggles. In 1963, Hunt moved the franchise—then nicknamed the Texans—to Kansas City and renamed them the Chiefs.
The Chiefs won three American Football League (AFL) championships from 1962 to 1970, and then joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger. The team appeared in five Super Bowls—IV, V, VI, XVII, and XLIX—winning Super Bowl IV behind quarterback Len Dawson; they have not appeared in a Super Bowl since. Following Lamar Hunt’s death in 2006, his son Clark took over as chairman of the board of directors; Clark represents one of four principal shareholder families that controlthe franchise via a trust organized by Lamar Hunt’s widow Norma reputedly worth upwards of $1 billion.
