They have won ten AFL championships, three Super Bowls (I, IV, L), and have had 23 playoff appearances since their founding in 1960. They are also one of two NFL teams based in Missouri; another is located just outside St. Louis – which contains two other teams: St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Royals – called out Missouri due to antitrust laws dating back to Wal-Mart stores being illegally located there while they were trying to stop them from opening up shop there during that time; that same state law prevents any additional franchises from being located within 100 miles (160 km) of either side of St. Louis until another state steps up to try to get an NFL or MLB franchise for themselves like what happened when Baltimore got an MLB expansion franchise called out Baltimore Orioles due to an antitrust lawsuit settlement between Major League Baseball and Washington D.C..

The Chiefs have won four AFL championships, one AFL-NFL Super Bowl championship, and have had ten players inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They are also just one of two teams to have not allowed a touchdown in an entire Super Bowl game, along with the 1972 Miami Dolphins (Super Bowl VII). In 1959 and 1960, Lamar Hunt led multiple ownership groups that tried to purchase an NFL franchise before ultimately leading his own group which brought an AFL franchise to Dallas which would become known as the Dallas Texans. Although that first Texans team folded after just one season due to poor attendance despite having on its roster such future NFL greats as quarterback Cotton Davidson, linebacker Chuck Howley, punter Danny Villanueva and rookie defensive end Jethro Pugh; Hunt soon began planning for a new football league which would rival the established NFL.
