History
The Jayhawks, or KU, is the name given to the sports teams of the University of Kansas. They compete in the NCAA’s Division I as a member of the Big 12 Conference. The Jayhawks’ origins can be traced back to 1886 when a group of students at the university formed a team to play against a rival school in Kansas City. The team was christened “the Jayhawkers” after a group of vigilantes who operated in Kansas during the Civil War. The name “Jayhawks” was officially adopted by the university in 1904.
The Jayhawks have a long-standing rivalry with the Kansas State Wildcats, and the two teams regularly compete against each other in what is known as the “Sunflower Showdown.” The Jayhawks also have rivalries with other schools in the Big 12 Conference, particularly the Oklahoma Sooners and Missouri Tigers.

The Jayhawks have a long-standing rivalry with the Missouri Tigers. The teams have met yearly since 1907, making it the oldest basketball rivalry west of the Mississippi River and the second-oldest in NCAA Division I history. It is one of two annual college basketball rivalries currently featuring two former Big 12 opponents, the other being Duke–North Carolina.
