The Chiefs have won three AFL championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1969. They became the second AFL team (after the New York Jets) to defeat an NFL team in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. The team’s victory on January 11, 1970, remains the club’s last championship game victory and appearance to date, and occurred while they were still known as the Kansas City Chiefs; they returned to using that name beginning with their win in Super Bowl LIII 54 years later. The Chiefs were also successful in winning divisional championships 5 times between 1970 & 2019 ― 1971 AFC West divisional champions, 1973 AFC West divisional champions, 2016 AFC West divisional champions, 2017 AFC West divisional champions & 2018 AFC West divisional champions. Between 1991 & 2019 they qualified for the playoffs 13 times which included 8 divisional titles and Wild Card berths 4 times ― 1991 AFC Wild Card Playoffs berth via 1993 second-place finish with an 11–5 (.688) record within their conference & a franchise-best 10 consecutive wins en route to capturing their 1st division title since 1971 as well as their 1st playoff appearance since 1986 when they lost 37–14 at home against eventual conference champion Buffalo Bills whom went on to defeat Oakland Raiders 51–3 in American Football Conference Championship Game before losing 27–17 against Washington Redskins whom captured Super Bowl XXVI; 1992 AFC Wild Card Playoffs berth via capturing 2nd straight AFC West title with an 11–5 (.688) record; 1993 AFC Wild Card Playoffs berth via 2nd place finish within conference behind only eventual conference & eventual Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys whom went 13–3 (.813); 2015 AFC Wild Card Playoffs berth behind only eventual conference & eventual Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos whom went 12–4 (.750); 2016 AFC Divisional Round home loss 23-16 against eventual conference runner-up Pittsburgh Steelers whom went 12-5 (.706); 2017 season which resulted in them redeeming themselves for prior year’s loss by defeating Pittsburgh Steelers 18-16 at Arrowhead Stadium during 2017 AFC Divisional Round en route to advancing to face New England Patriots during 2017 AFC Championship Game where they would lose 27-20 at Gillette Stadium; & finally 2018 season which resulted yet again in them defeating Indianapolis Colts during 2018 AFC Divisional Round by a score of 31-13 en route to advancing to face New England Patriots during 2018 AFC Championship Game where upon losing 37-31 in overtime despite overcoming a 14 point deficit with 8:24 remaining in 4th quarter.
