The Chiefs have won three AFL championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1969. They became the second AFL team (after the New York Jets) to defeat an NFL team in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV in 1970. The team’s victory on January 11, 1970 remains the club’s last championship game victory and appearance to date, and occurred alongside the franchise’s second Super Bowl appearance that same year. Between 1995 and 2016, the franchise mostly struggled making six playoffs appearances during that span; they qualified for four AFC West divisional titles but never made it further than Arrowhead Stadium. In 2017 they ended their streak of playoff futility by earning their first divisional playoff berth since 1986 along with their first AFC West title since 2010—their first playoff appearance since 2016—and first playoff win since 1994 by defeating the defending Super Bowl champions New England Patriots 27–20 on January 15, 2018; this was also their first home playoff win since January 1994 when they defeated Joe Montana and his eventual champion San Francisco 49ers 37-14 en route to winning their last Super Bowl title against Buffalo 19-7 seven days later. They then suffered a close loss during overtime to Tom Brady’s eventual champion Patriots by a score of 37-31 which denied them of back-to-back appearances for just second time ever (first time since 1993), but nonetheless earned them recognition from ESPN as being one of only three teams ever to lose back-to-back conference championship games at home despite having “an explosive offense that led them” both times “into OT”.
