You could check out a show at the Midland Theatre, go to a Kansas City Royals game, or explore the city’s various art galleries. If you’re looking for something a little more low-key, you could always visit one of the city’s many parks or go for a walk Downtown.
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is one of the most highly regarded art museums in the country and is a great way to spend a day in Kansas City. With a permanent collection that includes works by Monet, Van Gogh, and Andy Warhol, as well as excellent rotating exhibitions, there is something for everyone at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Admission to the museum is free, making it a great option for budget-minded travelers.
Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art
Founded in 1984, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art is one of Kansas City’s premiere museums. The museum features a wide variety of contemporary art, both temporary exhibitions and permanent collections. The Kemper also has an extensive education program, offering classes and workshops for all ages. Admission to the museum is free.
The National WWI Museum and Memorial

Visit the National WWI Museum and Memorial this Friday for a day of exploration and learning. The museum is dedicated to telling the story of The Great War and the global conflict that shaped the world we live in today. With interactive exhibits, films, and artifacts, you’ll gain a new understanding of the war and its impact on the world.
Saturday
There’s plenty to do in Kansas City this weekend! On Saturday, you can check out the Farmer’s Market in the morning, then head to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in the afternoon. In the evening, catch a show at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre.
The Kansas City Zoo
The Kansas City Zoo is a large zoo located in Swope Park in Kansas City, Missouri. The zoo has more than 1,300 animals and covers over 200 acres. Visitors can see animals from all over the world, including Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The zoo also has a children’s petting zoo, a train, and a tram.
The Kansas City Museum
The Kansas City Museum at Corinthian Hall is a taxing, but well worth it visit for history buffs and those who appreciate beautifully preserved architecture. The first thing you notice upon approach is the opulent Flemish-revival style of the building, which was built in 1907 as the home of Samuel Mitchill Barber.
The main focuses of the museum’s three stories are Native American life in the area, the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails, and Kansas City during the Civil War. You can also explore an old-time general store, street car, blacksmith shop, and print shop on the first floor. Upstairs holds two rotating exhibits along with permanent displays on KC’s musical heritage – jazz greats Charlie Parker and Count Basie both have entire rooms dedicated to their lives and work.
If you’re interested in taking a tour of KC during the Victorian era, this is definitely the place to go. Even if museums aren’t normally your thing, it’s tough to not be impressed by this gorgeous piece of living history.
The Arabia Steamboat Museum
If you’re looking for something a little different this weekend, head to the Arabia Steamboat Museum. This unique museum is dedicated to the preservation of the steamboat Arabia, which sunk in the Missouri River in 1856. The Arabia was rediscovered in 1988, and today, visitors can see more than 200,000 artifacts that were on board the ship when it sank. The museum is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $7 for children ages 5-12.

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum
The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is a must-see for any baseball fan, especially those interested in the history of the game. The museum tells the story of how African American ballplayers were segregated from the major leagues and formed their own professional leagues. These “Negro Leagues” were hugely popular and produced some of the greatest players in baseball history, including Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and Jackie Robinson. The museum features exhibits on the history of the Negro Leagues, as well as a Hall of Fame where you can learn about the legends of the game.
The American Jazz Museum
The American Jazz Museum in the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District is a must-see for music lovers visiting Kansas City. Boasting one of the world’s most extensive collections of jazz artifacts, the museum chronicles the history of this uniquely American art form from its early beginnings to the present day.
In addition to its impressive array of exhibits, the museum also hosts a number of live music events throughout the year. Whether you’re in town for a weekend or a week, be sure to catch a performance at the American Jazz Museum.
The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures
The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures is a fun and educational attraction for visitors of all ages. The museum features toys and miniatures from around the world and throughout history. The collection includes over 20,000 toys and miniatures, making it one of the largest collections in the United States.
The museum is open every day from 10am to 5pm, with extended hours on Thursdays until 9pm. Admission is $10 for adults, $6 for children ages 3-12, and free for children under 3.
