In 1960, the American Football League was created and Dallas was awarded an expansion franchise. The new team was nicknamed the Texans and was owned by Lamar Hunt, who would later be instrumental in the creation of the AFC. The team’s first head coach was Hank Stram, who would lead the club to three AFL Championship titles.
The Dallas Texans began play in the 1960 AFL season and had immediate success. The team won its first 11 games and finished the season with a record of 12-2, winning the AFL Championship. In 1961, the Texans again won the AFL Championship with a 10-3-1 record. The following season, the team moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs.
In 1963, the Chiefs won their third AFL Championship with a 11-2-1 record. The team then went on to win Super Bowl IV, defeating the Minnesota Vikings 23-7. Since then, the Chiefs have appeared in six more AFC Championship Games but have yet to return to the Super Bowl.
