UNC won titles in 1982, 1993, and 2005, while Kansas claimed championships in 1988, 1991, and 1992.

The two programs have met a total of 178 times, with UNC holding a slim 90-88 lead in the all-time series. The Tar Heels have won four of the last five meetings, including a 74-71 victory over the Jayhawks in the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
