The Chiefs have won three AFL championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1969. They became the second AFL team (after the New York Jets) to defeat an NFL team in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. The team’s victory on January 11, 1970, remains the club’s last championship game victory and appearance to date, and occurred during what was arguably professional football’s greatest dynasty. In 1972 former Texas Longhorn quarterback Craig Morton replaced Len Dawson as head coach and led the team to an 8–5–1 record—and their only playoff appearance during his tenure—losing 17–14 to eventual Super Bowl VII champion Miami Dolphins. He was subsequently replaced by Jack Steadman who led the team from 1974 through 1977; Steadman had previously served as one of Hank Stram’s assistant coaches with the Dallas Texans/Chiefs from 1960 to 1963. In 1976 Steadman led a group that purchased majority interest for $20 million; he then became general managing partner for a short time before selling his stake back to Lamar Hunt for $22 million just prior to his death from cancer in 1977 at age 40.[48][49]

Lamar Hunt hired Marv Levy as general manager on February 4, 1978; Levy would ultimately become executive vice president and general manager of operations.[50] On January 13, 1983 Head Coach Marion Campbell was fired after going 2-14 during the 1982 season and was replaced by John Mackovic.[51] After four seasons Mackovic was fired on December 18, 1986 after going 11-22-1 during his tenure and was replaced by Frank Gansz.[52] On December 27, 1988 Gansz died of leukemia[53] two days after being diagnosed with the disease[54] less than 24 hours after coaching his final game for Kansas City.[55][56] On January 17, 1989 Marty Schottenheimer who had served as defensive coordinator for Cleveland Browns under head coach Bud Grant[57] was named head coach.[58][59][60]

The team’s playoff history

The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). Hunt’s son, Clark, serves as chairman and CEO.

The team’s playoff history spans nearly 60 years, dating back to their time in the AFL. In 1965, they won their first AFL Championship, and they appeared in two Super Bowls while they were members of the AFL (I and IV). Since joining the NFL, they have won 9 Division championships (tied for most in AFC history), appeared in 20 Conference Championships game (second most in NFL history), and have played in 12 Super Bowls (tied for 2nd all time). They have lost 8 of those appearances, including 4 straight from Super Bowl I to Super Bowl IV. They are also 1-1 in Super Bowls against their AFC West archrival Oakland Raiders with their lone victory coming at Super Bowl IV where they defeated them by a score of 23-7.

The team’s current playoff chances

Although the Chiefs lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 12, they remain in good playoff position. With a record of 9-3, they are currently the sixth seed in the AFC. They have a chance to improve their seeding with games against the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons in the next few weeks.

Even if they don’t move up in the standings, they are still likely to qualify for the playoffs. They have a 78% chance of making the playoffs according to FiveThirtyEight’s predictions. This is because there are currently only two teams with better records than the Chiefs in the AFC (the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills) and four teams with worse records (the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Las Vegas Raiders, and Cleveland Browns).

The Chiefs’ chances of winning the Super Bowl are also fairly good at this point. FiveThirtyEight gives them an 8% chance of winning it all, which is tied for the fourth best odds in the NFL.
