The Kansas City Chiefs’ Playoff History
The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. They were founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans, a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City and assumed their current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team is valued at over $2 billion.
The Chiefs in the AFL playoffs (1960-1969)
The Kansas City Chiefs compete in the American Football League (AFL) playoffs. They have appeared in the AFL playoffs ten times, winning three championships. In total, they have played in 23 playoff games. The Chiefs began play in the AFL in 1960. The Chiefs won their first AFL championship in 1962. They appeared in the 1963 AFL Championship Game, but lost to the San Diego Chargers 51-10. The Chiefs won their second AFL championship in 1966. They appeared in two more AFL Championship Games, losing to the Oakland Raiders 17-7 in 1967 and to the New York Jets 27-23 in 1968. The Chiefs won their third and final AFL championship in 1969.
The Chiefs made their first appearance in the AFC playoffs in 1970, following the merger of the AFL and NFL. They defeated the Miami Dolphins 27-24 in overtime, but lost to the Oakland Raiders 17-16 in the AFC Championship Game. The Chiefs made seven straight appearances in the AFC playoffs from 1971 to 1977, but they never made it past the Divisional Round. From 1978 to 1986, the Chiefs only made one playoff appearance, losing to the New York Jets 14-0 in 1986. The Chiefs made four straight appearances in the AFC playoffs from 1987 to 1990, but they never made it past the Divisional Round again. Finally, from 1991 to 1993, engineered by head coach Marty Schottenheimer and led by quarterback Joe Montana, running back Marcus Allen, linebacker Derrick Thomas and tight end Keith Cash, among others,
the Kansas City Chiefs won three consecutive AFC West division championships and two AFC conference championships (in 1991 and 1993), qualifying for three straight Super Bowls (XVII losses), culminating with a victory over NFC’s Green Bay Packers at Super Bowl IV 52-17) for their first ever Lombardi Trophy (and currently their only Lombardi Trophy as of 2019).
The Chiefs in the NFL playoffs (1970-present)
The Kansas City Chiefs have appeared in the National Football League playoffs 25 times since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, including nine appearances in the AFC Championship Game. They have played in five Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl IV and losing Super Bowl I, Super Bowl XLIX, and Super Bowl LIII. The franchise has also had four members inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
In 1969, the Chiefs won their second American Football League championship. The victory earned them a trip to play in the first ever AFC-NFC World Championship Game (which would later become known as the Super Bowl). The Chiefs fell to the NFL’s Green Bay Packers by a score of 35-10.
The 1970 season was very successful for the Chiefs. They compiled an 11-3 record and won their third AFL championship. This time, they defeated the Oakland Raiders 17-7 in the AFL Championship Game. As champions of the AFL, they once again played in the World Championship Game (Super Bowl V), this time against the NFC’s Minnesota Vikings. The Chiefs won by a score of 23-7, giving them their first ever Super Bowl victory.
The 1971 season was not as successful as 1970, as the Chiefs finished with a 9-5 record and did not make it back to either the AFL Championship Game or the World Championship Game.
The 1972 season saw return to form for the Chiefs, as they compiled an 11-3 record and won their fourth AFC Central division title. They lost to the Miami Dolphins 27-24 in an overtime thriller in the divisional round of the playoffs.
1973 was another successful regular season for Kansas City, as they won their fifth AFC Central division title with a 10-4 record. However, they once again lost to Miami in the divisional round of the playoffs, this time by a score of 16-3.
After missing out on the playoffs in 1974 and 1975, Kansas City returned to form in 1976 by winning their sixth AFC Central division title with an 11-3 record. They went on to lose to Pittsburgh in overtime by a score of 16-10 in what has been called one of “the most crushing defeats” in Chiefs history.
The 1977 season was largely forgettable for Kansas City, as they finished with a 5-9 record and did not make it back to either the AFC Championship game or Super Bowl Vlll
