After being dismissed as the Browns’ head coach by Art Modell in January 1963, Brown had shown interest in establishing another NFL franchise in Ohio and looked at both Columbus and Cincinnati as potential sites. His presumed first choice for the new team was Cleveland Stadium but beliefs that its large capacity could not be consistently filled led him to cross it off his list early on. Modell’s increasing involvement in racial discrimination lawsuits stemming from his tenure with the Browns also factored into Brown’s decision not to return there.
