The History of the Rivalry
Kansas and North Carolina first played each other in 1952, with the Tar Heels winning 92-55. The Jayhawks and Tar Heels would go on to become two of the most dominant college basketball programs in history. They’ve combined for 16 national championships and 55 Final Four appearances.
The rivalry really took off in the 1980s, when the two teams met four times in the NCAA tournament. The first meeting was in 1982, when North Carolina beat Kansas 63-62 in the championship game.
