The Rivalry
UNC and Kansas have a storied rivalry that dates back to the early 1900s. The two teams have played each other close to 200 times, with UNC leading the series 107-95. The two teams often meet in the NCAA tournament, with UNC winning the most recent meeting in the Elite Eight in 2017.
The History of the Rivalry
Kansas and North Carolina first played each other in 1952, with the Tar Heels winning 92-55. The Jayhawks and Tar Heels would go on to become two of the most dominant college basketball programs in history. They’ve combined for 16 national championships and 55 Final Four appearances.
The rivalry really took off in the 1980s, when the two teams met four times in the NCAA tournament. The first meeting was in 1982, when North Carolina beat Kansas 63-62 in the championship game. The next year, the Jayhawks got revenge, defeating North Carolina 68-63 in the semifinals en route to their first national championship.
The two teams met again in 1991, with North Carolina coming out on top 79-73. Then, in 1992, they met one final time in the tournament, with Kansas winning 72-65. That victory gave Kansas its second national title and cemented the Jayhawks’ place as one of college basketball’s all-time greats.
The rivalry has cooled off since then, but the Jayhawks and Tar Heels still remain two of the sport’s premier programs. They’ve both won multiple national championships since their last meeting in 1992, and they continue to be two of the nation’s top recruiting schools.
