When to start applying
The best time to start applying for deer tags is early July. This is when the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) begins accepting applications for the upcoming deer season. You can apply online or through the mail. The earlier you apply, the better your chances of being drawn for a tag.
The application process
Kansas is a popular state for deer hunting, and the application process for deer tags can be competitive. The good news is that there are several ways to increase your chances of being drawn for a tag.
Kansas deer tags are allocated through a random computer-generated drawing. However, preference points are awarded to applicants who were unsuccessful in previous drawings, with one point being awarded for each year that the applicant was unsuccessful. Hunters can also increase their chances of being drawn by applying for multiple tags or by applying as a group.
The deadline to apply for Kansas deer tags is typically in early April, and the drawing is usually held in mid-May. Applicants will be notified by mail if they have been successful, and tags will be mailed out in early June. If you are unsuccessful in the drawing, your preference points will carry over to the next year.
