The National Football League (NFL) has used a number of different formats to determine their league champion. The modern-day NFL playoff system began in 1933, but it was not until 1966 that the league used a playoff tournament to determine the NFL Champion. In the intervening years, the championship was determined by a vote of team owners or, in some years, by a best-record-during-the-regular-season method. The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the end of the regular season to determine the NFL champion. Six teams from each of the league’s two conferences qualify for the playoffs based on regular season records. The current playoff format as conceived by then–NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle in 1966 wnum was implemented in 1975, after changes were made to increase the number of teams qualifying for that year’s playoffs from 10 to 12 (and subsequently to 14). Prior to 1975, only four teams qualified for playoffs: three division champions and one “wild card” team which was chosen by having the best won–lost record among non–division champions but no worse than fourth place overall (i.e., among all teams). Changes since initially implemented: In 1978, five teams from each conference qualified instead of four with first round bye given to top two seeds regardless of conference; this system remained until 1989 when number of wildcards expanded from one per conference to two per conference—a system which Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has called “fair and logical”.
