The Rivalry
The Kansas-North Carolina game is one of the most highly-anticipated games of the college basketball season. The two teams have a long-standing rivalry, and both are usually ranked in the top 25. This year’s game is sure to be a close one.
The History of the Rivalry
The two schools have played each other a total of 105 times, with North Carolina leading the series 64-41. The Tar Heels have won the last six meetings between the two schools, with the most recent victory coming in 2016 by a score of 87-79.
The rivalry first started to heat up in the early 1950s, when the two programs were among the best in the country. The first meeting between the two schools was in 1957, when North Carolina won 84-66.
The intensity of the rivalry culminated during the 1980s, when the two teams met four times in the NCAA Tournament. The first meeting was in 1981, when North Carolina defeated Kansas 63-62 in the NCAA Midwest Regional Final en route to winning the National Championship. The second meeting was in 1982, when Kansas got revenge by defeating North Carolina 72-65 in the NCAA West Regional Semifinal.
The third meeting was in 1984, when Kansas again got revenge on North Carolina, this time by defeating them 73-67 in the NCAA Midwest Regional Final. The fourth and final meeting between these two great programs was in 1986, when Kansas finally broke through and defeated North Carolina 54-52 in the NCAA Final Four semifinal on their way to winning their first National Championship ever.
The Current Rivalry
The current Kansas-North Carolina rivalry dates back to the early 1990s, when the two teams met in the NCAA tournament four times in six years. The Jayhawks won three of those four games, including a 79-73 victory in the 1991 Final Four that gave them their first national championship in over 20 years.
The Tar Heels got revenge the following year, defeating Kansas in the tournament’s Elite Eight round on their way to a national title. The two teams would meet again in the 1993 and 1995 tournaments, with each team winning once.
In recent years, the rivalry has cooled off somewhat, as the two teams have only met twice since then, both times in the regular season. However, with both programs currently ranked in the top five of the AP poll, there is a good chance that they could meet again this year in the NCAA tournament.
The Game
The game between Kansas and North Carolina will take place on March 3, 2020. This will be the first time the two teams have faced each other since the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship game, which North Carolina won.
The Location of the Game
The game will be played at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The stadium has a capacity of 62,000 and is the home of the North Carolina Tar Heels football team.
The Time of the Game
The game is set to tip off at 9:20 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 31. The contest will be broadcast on CBS.
The Outcome
The game will take place on March 3, 2020. The Tar Heels are currently ranked as the number one team in the nation, while the Jayhawks are number three.
The Winner
The Jayhawks, who have yet to lose this season, are the better team. They’re also more battle-tested, having played in the Big 12. But the Tar Heels have size, athleticism and depth. This should be a close game, but Kansas will come out on top.
The Loser
And then there were four. The Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament is down to the Elite 8, and while there are some great match-ups on tap for this weekend, there is one game that stands out above the rest. The winner of Kansas and North Carolina will not only go to the Final Four, but they will have a chance to play for the National Championship.
This will be a battle of two of the most storied programs in college basketball history. Kansas has won 3 National Championships, while North Carolina has won 5. These two teams have also been to a combined 27 Final Fours. Needless to say, this is a huge game with major implications.
So when is the game? Unfortunately, it is not yet known. The game will be played on Saturday, April 4th, but the exact time has not been announced. It is possible that the game could be played at either 6:09pm EST or 8:49pm EST, but we will not know for sure until closer to game time.
The bottom line is that this is a must-watch game, no matter when it ends up being played. So clear your schedule for Saturday night and get ready for some great college basketball!
