The Jayhawks in the NCAA Tournament
The Jayhawks haven’t been to the Final Four since winning it all in 2008, and haven’t won a tournament game since 2013. In that time, Kansas has lost in the Round of 32, the Round of 64, and the Sweet Sixteen. We take a look at the Jayhawks’ recent NCAA tournament history.
Kansas’ NCAA tournament history
The Jayhawks have won five NCAA tournament titles, with the most recent coming in 2008. They also have made 18 Final Four appearances, which is second only to UCLA’s record of 19. Kansas has been a No. 1 seed 20 times and a No. 2 seed 12 times in the NCAA tournament.
Kansas’ NCAA tournament success has led to some impressive streaks. The Jayhawks are currently on a NCAA-record 29-consecutive NCAA tournament appearance streak, which began in 1990. They also have the second-longest streak of consecutive Sweet Sixteen appearances with 14 (1986-1999), behind only Kentucky’s 16-year run (1993-2008).
Despite all of this success, Kansas has not been able to win back-to-back NCAA championships since 1988 and 1989. The Jayhawks’ last title came in 2008, but they have not made it back to the Final Four since then.
The last time Kansas won March Madness
The Jayhawks’ last NCAA Tournament victory came in 2008, when they defeated Memphis in the championship game. That team was led by future NBA stars such as Mario Chalmers and Brandon Rush. Kansas has made the tournament every year since then, but has failed to make it back to the final game.

In recent years, Kansas has been one of the most successful teams in college basketball. The Jayhawks have won the NCAA tournament three times (2008, 2012, and 2018) and have been to the Final Four six times (2003, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2017, and 2018).

The Jayhawks should be able to handle the Bison in the first round. North Dakota State is a good team, but Kansas is simply better. The Jayhawks will win by double digits.

Auburn is one of the hottest teams in the country right now, winning 16 of their last 17 games. Saint Louis is no pushover either, winning 28 games this season. If Kansas can get past Auburn or Saint Louis, they’ll be in good shape to make a deep run in the tournament.
Sweet 16: vs. Marquette or Murray State
Marquette is led by star guard Markus Howard, who is averaging 25 points per game. Murray State has one of the best players in the country in Ja Morant, who is averaging 24 points, 10 assists, and 6 rebounds per game. Either team would be a tough matchup for Kansas, but the Jayhawks have what it takes to win.
Elite Eight: vs Duke or Gonzaga
This would be an epic matchup between two of college basketball’s blue bloods. Duke is led by freshman sensation Zion Williamson, who is averaging 22 points and 9 rebounds per game. Gonzaga has been one of the best teams in the country all season long, led by Rui Hachimura and Brandon Clarke. This would be a close game, but Kansas would have a slight edge thanks to their experience and defense.
Final Four: vs Michigan State or Virginia
This would be another tough matchup for Kansas, as Michigan State is one of the best teams in the country led by Cassius Winston and Josh Langford . Virginia is arguably the best team in the country ,defensively ,and they are led by Kyle Guy and De’Andre Hunter . But if any team can beat them ,it’s Kansas . This would be a closegame ,but ultimately ,the Jayhawks would come out on top . James Naismith ,the inventor of basketball ,would be proud .
Why Kansas could win it all this year
It’s been a decade since Kansas won the NCAA tournament, but the Jayhawks have a strong chance to take home the title this year. Here are three reasons why:
1. They have one of the best players in the country in Devonte’ Graham.
2. Their coach, Bill Self, is one of the best in the business.
3. They have a lot of experience, with several key players having been to the Final Four before.
With all that being said, it’s still going to be a tough road to victory for Kansas. But if any team has what it takes to win it all this year, it’s them.
Why Kansas Might Not Win This Year
In order to understand this, we need to take a look at the recent history of the Jayhawks. They haven’t been to a Final Four since 2012, and haven’t won a championship since 2008. This year, they lost early in the conference tournament and didn’t even make the NCAA tournament. So, what’s happened?
The Jayhawks’ weaknesses
Despite being a blue blood program, the Jayhawks have not won a national title since 2008.
One of the main reasons for their recent struggles is that they have not been able to consistently land top recruits. In the last five years, Kansas has only had two top-10 recruiting classes, per 247Sports’ Composite Team Rankings.
In order to win a national title, you need elite-level talent. While the Jayhawks have had some good players in that span, they haven’t had that game-changing player who can take over a game by himself.
Another issue for Kansas has been their inability to develop players once they get to campus. The Jayhawks have had 14 players leave early for the NBA Draft since 2012, and none of them have become superstar pros.
Part of the problem is that Kansas has been relying too heavily on one-and-done players in recent years. While it’s true that some of those one-and-done players have gone on to have successful NBA careers (e.g. Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid), it’s also true that most of them don’t end up winning an NCAA title in their lone season of college basketball (e.g. Josh Jackson and Ben McLemore).
If Kansas wants to win a national title, they need to start getting better recruits and doing a better job of developing the talent they do bring in.
Why Kansas might not win March Madness this year
It’s been a while since the Jayhawks won it all. The last time Kansas won the NCAA tournament was in 2008, which was also the last time they made the Final Four.
This year, the Jayhawks are a top seed in the Midwest Region and are heavy favorites to make it to the Final Four. But there are a few reasons why Kansas might not win it all this year.
First, Kansas is not as deep as some of the other top teams in the country. They relied heavily on their starters during the regular season, and those starters might be tired come tournament time.
